Challenging the Unknown
Charles Darwin should not only be recognized for his great contribution to the scientific world, but for his desire to question and challenge the world around him. The theory of divine design, which explains evolution and the adaptation of species as a result of God, was considered to be the correct explanation of life on earth for many. By raising questions and having the desire to explore the biological unknown, Darwin ultimately challenged his society around him. Essentially, Darwin was a pioneer not only in the sciences, but in life in general. He wanted answers and therefore set out in the world to find them. That in itself is amazing!

This makes me think of the first lecture and the description of course: the counter-Darwinian critical tradition that is outside orthodoxy.
ReplyDeleteEven though Darwin's theory of natural selection is widely accepted now, at the time of publication, it was outside orthodoxy.
